Summer 2010 Youth Violence Prevention Resources/Gang Crimes Bureau Prevention Section
GCB Prevention Section: Community Gang Forums and Gang Talks for Youth will be held in June, August and September for back to school. This program is in collaboration with Partnerships for Youth at Risk, North Las Vegas Police Department and Henderson Police Department.
PAL: The Southern Nevada Police Athletic League currently operates programs in various community centers and sports facilities in Las Vegas. The Southern Nevada Police Athletic League also sponsors sports teams to provide an alternative to the violence that unstructured time often leads to. Being involved in sports promotes friendly competition and camaraderie among teammates. In areas where kids do not have the most desirable family and economic situations, it is important for them to have a place where they belong and a reason to be proud of themselves. If you would like to join PAL, you may visit one of their centers. Call 343-1316 for more information.
LVMPD Youth Education Section Initiatives Summer 2010:
- Radd Kids - empowering kids to protect themselves from abductions by replacing the fear, confusion and panic of dangerous situations with confidence, personal safety skills and self esteem. These are done at various YMCA’s in the months of June, July & August. Each class is a weeklong and done through a partnership with Nevada Child Seekers.
- Toe Tags - done at CCJH and Spring Mountain Youth Camp for incarcerated youth. This program deals with the issues such as drinking and driving, drug abuse, suicide, bullying, school violence and several other issues youth go through. The officers spend one week in each “pod” at the detention center and at the conclusion the youth perform for the other incarcerated youth at the facility. This program has a huge emotional impact on the youth.
- Anti-Violence Prevention Program - taught to the at-risk Boys and Girls Clubs at the following locations: Doolittle, McCabe (28th/Stewart), Lied Community Center and Pearson Community Center. This program addresses the issues of bullying, self esteem, gang violence, drug resistance and conflict management. Last year (2009), we also brought in Nevada DMV testers to assist those teenagers who were eligible for a driver’s licenses to assist them in acquiring a Nevada driver’s license. For the teenagers we also set up a seminar at the Clark County Coroner’s Office to allow them (with parent approval) to attend the coroner class put on by retired Detective Roy Chandler.
- Molasky Community Center Summer Program - this program covers all the material we cover in DARE (tobacco, drugs, alcohol, inhalants, self esteem and gangs) along with over-the-counter drugs, Internet safety, bike safety and stranger danger. Children are placed in groups by age so that the materials presented are age appropriate.
